“Copperhead”: An Interview With Bill Kauffman

Created on 26 June 2013

The movie I've most been looking forward to this year is "Copperhead," which opens in many cities this Friday. That's partly because it was directed by Ron Maxwell, who has made two of the movies that real Civil War buffs most adore: "Gettysburg" and "Gods and Generals." (Get 'em both for less than ten bucks.) It's partly because it promises to be one seriously unusual Civil War movie — it doesn't center on the question of slavery, for instance. But my anticipation mostly has to do with the scriptwriter: Bill Kauffman, who has been known so far (if not well-enough known) for his unorthodox books of history and his impossible-to-pin-down (in a good way) political journalism.

Based in Batavia, NY (in Western NY State, midway between Rochester and Buffalo), Kauffman has been a most unusual public presence for a couple of decades now. One illustration (among many possible) of this: His writing has appeared in both The Nation and The American Conservative. Part anarchist, part paleocon, part small-town advocate, part regionalist, part pacifist, he brings an expansive, generous temperament to bear on his topics that transcends the usual categories in a most wonderful way. If you're tired of the usual left/right fistfights — and who isn't? — Bill's work will come as a breath of very fresh air.

Since interviewing him for my old blog (you can find links to that interview at the end of this one) I've struck up a friendship with Bill. I took advantage of it to drop him a note and ask if he'd answer some questions for the blog about the new movie. He graciously agreed.

New movie 'Copperhead' features work of local screenwriter

Created on 26 June 2013

While Western New York has enjoyed several connections to the film industry, Friday's national release of the film "Copperhead" surely will be the first time a movie features a screenplay from a resident of the Genesee County town of Elba.

Bill Kauffman has authored several books, mostly non-fiction. He edits other authors. His reviews and essays have been widely published and he often contributes to the Wall Street Journal and The American Conservative.

'Copperhead' hits all of Kauffman's themes, and is a big hit with screening audience

Created on 14 June 2013

If Bill Kauffman sat down to write a screenplay, the result would surely be the movie "Copperhead."

The ideal Kauffman film would take a look at a side of history that is little known and rarely discussed. The lead character would be a dissenter, the holder of unpopular opinions who won't bow to conformity. The major themes would be love of family, community before nation, and fealty to the Constitution. It would show how war rips asunder these values as brutally as it maims bodies and damages souls.

Copperhead Preview Screening at GCC

Created on 14 June 2013

Last night GCC was honored to host a preview screening of Ron Maxwell's new movie "Copperhead." A fundraiser for GO ART!, the theater was filled to capacity. No doubt, much of the appeal of the screening was to witness Elba native Bill Kauffman's handiwork come to fruition. Kauffman wrote the screenplay, which drew in part on the work of a novel about the home front during the Civil War. As the opening credits rolled, loud applause erupted when Kauffman's name appeared.

The Civil War Monitor - An Interview with Ron Maxwell

Created on 11 June 2013

Our conversation with Ron Maxwell, director of the forthcoming film "Copperhead." In this interview, Ron discusses the motivation behind filming this work and its similarities and differences to his time spent directing "Gettysburg" and "Gods and Generals." Additionally, Ron offers his thoughts on the impact of Civil War era film and why it still engages to such a high degree with the general public. (A special note on a change in the release schedule. "Copperhead" will be out in select cities June 28 and hitting New York City and Los Angeles theaters July 19.)

Interviews: Josh Cruddas, Actor & Kate Rose Costume Designer

Created on 14 May 2013

The first actor I interviewed involved with Copperhead was Josh Cruddas, which happened right after filming began. We just went for the basics and he promised me another interview once filming ended, to give a better picture of his overall experience.

Release Date for “Copperhead” Set for June 28, 2013

Can There Be Such a Thing as a Family Civil War Movie?

Created on 24 February 2013

family night 1Can you believe that there are actually people out there in this world who watch movies together as a family, and then sit and discuss them? I personally know of a few who do, and some who don’t, but probably would if there was something worth discussing. Just last spring, when I was teaching a course on World War II, I sent out notice that we would be watching parts of Schindler’s List after school.
